At least 10 students have been confirmed dead after a huge fire broke out at a dormitory in Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County.

The fire reportedly started in the middle of the night on Thursday, May 28, 2026, and spread quickly through the dormitory as students slept.

Reports indicate that some doors jammed during the chaos, trapping several students inside as others desperately tried to escape.

Several more students were injured, while rescue operations and investigations are still ongoing. Kenya Red Cross and emergency teams responded to the scene as shocked parents gathered outside the school.

Police say the cause of the fire has not yet been established.

The tragedy has once again raised concerns over safety standards in Kenyan boarding schools following years of deadly dormitory fires.
