The number of students who lost their lives in the dormitory fire at Utumishi Girls Academy has now risen to at least 15–16, with some reports indicating the toll could be even higher.

More than 70 students have reportedly been hospitalized with burns and smoke inhalation as rescue and search operations continue at the school.

The fire broke out in the middle of the night in a senior dormitory, with survivors claiming some doors jammed during the chaos, trapping students inside.

Government officials, including Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, have since arrived at the scene as distraught parents continue gathering at the school.

Authorities say investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
