Liverpool have sacked head coach Arne Slot with immediate effect, just one year after the Dutchman led the club to its historic 20th Premier League title.

The 47-year-old departs Anfield following a disastrous title defence that saw the club slump to a fifth-place finish in the 2025-26 season. Liverpool ended the campaign with just 60 points, their lowest Premier League tally since the 2015-16 season, and suffered 19 defeats across all competitions.

The sacking comes despite a £450 million summer spending spree. Record signings Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz heavily underperformed or struggled with fitness. Relations in the dressing room also deteriorated in the final months, with high-profile players including the departing Mohamed Salah openly criticizing Slot's style of play and calling for a return to more energetic football.

The club acknowledged significant off-field trauma during the season, including the tragic death of forward Diogo Jota in a car crash last summer.

In a statement, Fenway Sports Group said the club had "collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary in order for the club to keep moving forward."

Former Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola is the frontrunner to succeed Slot, having steered Bournemouth to a historic sixth-place finish and boasting a strong working relationship with Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes.
