Some places meant for children to sleep peacefully become their graves.
In the early hours of September 5, 2024, around 2 AM, a deadly fire broke out in the boys’ dormitory at Hillside Endarasha Academy in the Belle Vue area near Nyeri town.
The dormitory was overcrowded — housing over 150 young boys in a building that should never have been allowed to operate that way. As the fire spread rapidly through the wooden structure and flammable materials, panic erupted. Children screamed and fought to escape, but many were trapped.
Emergency exits were locked from outside. Windows had iron grills. The fire started near the main entrance, cutting off the easiest way out. Smoke and flames swallowed everything.
By the time rescuers and parents arrived, it was too late.
21 boys, mostly aged between 9 and 14, lost their lives that night. Dozens more suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation, fighting for their lives in hospital.
Investigations revealed shocking safety failures. The school had ignored basic government rules for boarding dormitories — rules created after previous tragic school fires. There were no proper emergency exits, no adequate fire equipment, and dangerous overcrowding. Many called it pure negligence.
The whole country was shaken. Distraught parents rushed to the school, crying and searching for their children. National outrage exploded as people demanded answers.
In the months that followed, affected families took the school proprietors, Ministry of Education officials, and government bodies to court, accusing them of failing to protect innocent children. A court later ordered the school to operate only as a day school, banning boarding due to safety concerns.
One year later, the pain is still fresh. Families continue mourning their sons while fighting for justice.
The Hillside Endarasha dormitory fire is a painful reminder of how many Kenyan schools still put children at risk through greed and negligence.
21 young boys gone in one night… while they were supposed to be safe in their beds.
