Safaricom has introduced an entry-level home internet package priced at KSh 800 per month, targeting residents in government affordable housing projects under its Wi-Fi Bamba brand.

The plan offers speeds of 10 to 15 Mbps with a Fair Usage Policy cap of 250GB, after which speeds drop to 1 Mbps. It is geo-fenced, meaning availability is restricted to specific whitelisted estates under the Boma Yangu affordable housing programme and is not accessible to the general public.

Other Wi-Fi Bamba tiers include a KSh 1,600 option at 15 Mbps with a 500GB FUP, and a KSh 2,000 plan at 20 Mbps capped at 750GB. The plans do not appear prominently on Safaricom's main website and are accessible via the *400# USSD code or the MySafaricom app for eligible areas.

Beyond fixed monthly plans, Safaricom is also piloting a pay-as-you-go model under Wi-Fi Bamba, offering hourly, daily, and weekly access through shared access points. A pilot in Nairobi's Mukuru area allows users to purchase bundles on the spot without committing to a monthly subscription, a model that mirrors how mobile data has traditionally worked.

The move is part of Safaricom's broader push to expand fixed broadband access amid growing competition from cheaper internet providers. Residents can check eligibility by dialling *400# or contacting Safaricom directly, as coverage for the lowest-tier plans remains limited to specific estates.
